VEDIC MATHS

                           By OMKAR TENDOLKAR

Hello friends,

This is  post number 53 from the series of "Vedic maths" blogs. Here in this blog we will learn about "Concept of vinculum number & Conversion of general numbers into vinculum numbers"

The technique of vinculum is very powerful and provides us with a method to convert digits in a number which are greater than 5, to digits less than 5.
After the conversion, all arithmetic operations are carried out using the converted number, which make the operation very simple and fast.
It is not necessary to convert all the digits but a judicious conversion of certain digits (above 5) can decrease the computation effort considerably.

VINCULUM NUMBER:
The numbers which by presentation contains both positive and negative digits are called vinculum numbers.
We will begin by seeing the method to convert any given number to its vinculum equivalent and back to its original value.
You may ask your any query or doubt in comment box. I will try to resolve as early as possible.

a) Conversion of general numbers into vinculum numbers:
Vinculum digits are computed for those digits which are greater than 5.
We obtain vinculum by converting the digits which are 5 and above 5 or less than 5 without changing the value of that number.
The sutras ‘Nikhilam Navatascharamam Dasatah’ and ‘Ekadhikena purvena’ are useful for conversion.

The steps involved are :
  1. Subtract the given digit from 9 & last from 10 and write it with a bar above it
  2. Add one to the digit on the left
Examples:

1. 148
Given Number: 148
subtract 8 from 10 to get 2,
and add 1 to 4 to get 5.                                 _
After conversion to vinculum number : 1 5 2.

2. 2285
Given Number: 2285
subtract 8 from 10 to get 2,
and add 1 to 2 to get 3.                                 _
After conversion to vinculum number : 2 3 2 5.

3. 22884
Given Number: 22884
subtract 8 from 10 to get 2,
subtract 8 from 9 to get 1,
and add 1 to 2 to get 3.                                 _ _
After conversion to vinculum number : 2 3 1 2 4

4. 7632

Given Number: 7632
subtract 6 from 10 to get 4,
subtract 7 from 9 to get 2,
and add 1 to 0 to get 1.                              _ _
After conversion to vinculum number : 1 2 4 3 2 .

5. 12289

Given Number: 12289
subtract 9 from 10 to get 1,
subtract 8 from 9 to get 1,
and add 1 to 2 to get 3.                                    _ _
After conversion to vinculum number : 1 2 3 1 1.

Convert the following numbers into vinculum number.
                                              _ _
1. 276 vinculum number is 3 2 4    _ _
2. 226832 vinculum number is 2 3 3 2 3 2  _ _
3. 12344682 vinculum number is 1 2 3 4 5 3 2 2

The simplicity of this method can be vouched from examples given above.

You may try following example:

Convert the following numbers into vinculum number.

1. 2889

2. 456789

3. 124899

You may answer this in comment box. You may ask your any query or doubt in comment box. I will try to resolve as early as possible.

In next blog we will discuss about "Conversion of vinculum number into general numbers.".

Are you excited for this?...
Then, please wait for it.
I will post my new blog in next week.

We will meet very soon through our next  blog. Till that stay connected, stay healthy and stay safe.

Thanks

for giving your valuable time.

Good day😊..
