                      This is  post number 54 from the series of "Vedic maths" blogs. Here in this blog we will learn about "Concept of vinculum number & Conversion of  vinculum numbers into general numbers"

The technique of vinculum is very powerful and provides us with a method to convert digits in a number which are greater than 5, to digits less than 5. 
After the conversion, all arithmetic operations are carried out using the converted number, which make the operation very simple and fast.
It is not necessary to convert all the digits but a judicious conversion of certain digits (above 5) can decrease the computation effort considerably. 

VINCULUM NUMBER:
The numbers which by presentation contains both positive and negative digits are called vinculum numbers.

We will begin by seeing the method to convert any given number to its vinculum equivalent and back to its original value.

b) Conversion of  vinculum numbers into general numbers:
Only vinculum digits, which are marked with a bar, are reconverted back to their original values,
The process of conversion is exactly reverse to the already done.
Vinculum are converted by Nikhilam where as other digits by ‘Ekanyunena’ sutra.

The steps involved are :
  1. Subtract 1 from the non-Vinculum digit to the immediate left of the Vinculum digit and write it down.
  2. Subtract the Vinculum digit from 10 and write it down. Repeat for all Vinculum digits.
Examples:
          _
1. 1 5 4                                  _
Given vinculum Number: 1 5 4            
After conversion to general number : 146.
          _
2. 2 2 3 5                               _
Given vinculum Number: 2 2 3 5          
After conversion to general number : 2175.
       _ _ _
3. 2 3 3 3                            _ _ _
Given vinculum Number: 2 3 3 3         
After conversion to general number : 1667.
           _
4. 5 0 3 4 5                            _
Given vinculum Number: 5 0 3 4 5    
After conversion to general number : 49745.
       _    _
5. 3 4 0 2 3                          _   _
Given vinculum Number: 3 4 0 2 3    
After conversion to general number : 25983.

Convert the following vinculum numbers into general number.
      _                                      
1. 12_ general number is 08
2. 376_ general number is 364
3. 2233 vinculum number is 2227

The simplicity of this method can be vouched from examples given above.
