                      This is  post number 101 from the series of "Vedic maths" blogs. Here in this blog we will learn about "Applications of the Sutras & Sub-sutras - 1"

VEDIC MATHEMATIC :

"VEDIC MATHEMATICS" is the name given to the ancient system of mathematics, or, to be precise, a unique technique of calculations based on simple rules and principles, with which any mathematical problem be it arithmetic, algebra, geometry or trigonometry can be solved, hold your breath, orally!

What we call "Vedic Mathematics" is a mathematical elaboration of 'Sixteen Simple Mathematical formulae from the Vedas' as brought out by Sri Bharati Krishna Tirthaji.

Sutras: 

The system is based on 16 Vedic sutras or aphorisms, which are actually word formulae describing natural ways of solving a whole range of problems.

Some examples of sutras are "By one more than the one before", "All from 9 & the last from 10", and "Vertically & Crosswise". These 16 one-line formulae originally written in Sanskrit, which can be easily memorized, enables one to solve long mathematical problems quickly.

1. Ekadhikena Purvena  ( By one more than the previous one )

For any integer ending with 5, the square always ends with 25 and begins with the multiple of previous integer and one more than the integer. For example:

• Square of 45 is 4 x 5 .. 25 = 2025.
• Square of 75 is 7 x 8 .. 25 = 5625.

2. Nikhilam Navatascaravam Dasatah ( All from 9 and the last from 10 ) 

For multiplication of any numbers near to less than multiple of 10,

• Step 1: Subtract the numbers with their closest multiple of 10 and multiply the results.
• Step 2: Subtract the results with other numbers.
• Step 3: Write the result of Step 2 in the beginning and result of Step 1 at the end.

For example: 98 x 97 = ?

• 100 – 98 = 02 and 100 – 97 = 03
• 02 x 03 = 06
• 98 – 03 or 97 – 02 = 95
• 95 and 06

So, the answer is 9506.

Example II: 98 x 88 =?

• 100 – 98 = 02 and 100 – 88 = 12
• 02 x 12 = 24
• 98 – 12 or 88 – 02 = 86.

So, the answer is 8624
